Marije Gertenbach (1990, NL) lives and works in Amsterdam. In her work she tries to question how one’s body experiences space. In a recent series of work she researches her own experience of carrying a baby, her body transforming into a space, and in becoming a mother. The temporary changes of the body and traces of time that are left on and in it, are new subjects in her work. “To feel a baby grow inside you, like you are a space. Become space together, then giving birth: an act of two bodies, still in one, becoming two. Attachment to your baby, the navel cord being cut, slowly. The many faces of motherhood.” Research into these subjects are the basis of Marije Gertenbach's practice. This translates into large scale paintings or installations with painting. For Marije the painting process is an intuitive practice, with research at its centre. Marije Gertenbach did her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education at The Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (graduating 2012), and was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in 2015 and 2016. She is represented by galerie dudokdegroot (Amsterdam).
